SAVANNAH

Finding Tom outside the door of the Airbnb on my return from the library was a surprise, although it irritated me that he thought he could just turn up when he felt like it. I was about to lean in and give him a kiss when he waved a white envelope in my face. I got the hint, he was a paying customer, for today at least. It was one step forward and two steps back. Maintaining my smile, I unlocked the door and invited him inside.

Tom wanted his usual and I went through the motions, all the time my stomach churning with annoyance at my misstep the last time I’d seen him. I was right, I’d pushed him too far, too soon, but I didn’t want to raise the subject if Tom didn’t.

‘You seem like you’re elsewhere,’ Tom said, stroking my back as I laid naked on my front.

He wasn’t wrong – Chloe’s other half of the money seemed unobtainable now. I’d had my chance and I’d blown it – the fact he’d turned up with money to pay for my time told me that. It was a professional arrangement, not a personal one, but I couldn’t deny I’d become invested in Chloe’s predicament.

‘I’m fine,’ I lied. ‘How’s things with you?’ I wasn’t interested in making conversation. I wanted Tom to leave, so I could drive home and wallow in self-pity, maybe have a glass or two of wine and watch Netflix but I had to keep up appearances and play nice.

‘I don’t know, my head’s all over the place. Chloe is being a bitch. I can’t stand to be around her.’

‘Oh dear,’ I said. Perhaps I still had a shot?

‘She seems intent on wanting to leave, says she doesn’t want anything, but as soon as she’s gone, I bet she’ll be demanding her half and I don’t see why I have to give it to her.’ Tom flexed his jaw, his tone venomous.

‘Is she insured? Perhaps you need to find an alternative way out of your marriage,’ I joked, chuckling darkly, but something sparked in Tom’s eyes. His expression made a cold unease creep into my chest. ‘I was kidding,’ I added quickly, plastering on a smile as I propped myself up on my elbows.

‘I know, but hey, it’s not a bad idea.’ He laughed, checking his watch. ‘I better get going.’

Tom rolled off the bed and started getting dressed, leaving me with no idea as to what he was thinking. Had I just suggested he murder his wife? More worryingly, was he considering it?
